Ryan Braun Fails Drug Test

11 Dec

2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. This after the slugger had his best season, en route to leading the Brewers to their first  Central division title.

Ryan Braun

This is bad for Braun and its bad for baseball. For Braun who is one of the up and coming stars of this decade, it means that all his career will now be in question just like, Bond, Clemens, Ramirez and Rodriguez before him. He will now be considered in many peoples eyes as a cheater. As if that wasn’t enough he will face scrutinization at every turn from fans and the media alike and he will likely be suspended for the first 50 games of the 2012 season.

This is also bad for baseball because Comissioner Bud Selig was very proud of his testing system that was introduced nearly a decade ago, even stating that young stars like Braun are now being tested yearly and passing meaning that the sport is as clean as it has ever been. This surely changes things though.

Whatever the case the MLB has done a good job with their new program and its been for the most part very effective. They can’t stop anyone from doing anything. They can only try to prevent it.

It will be very interesting to see how Braun approaches this from a media stand point. Hopefully he won’t make the same mistake so many players have before him and deny his use. As of right now he is appealing the  results of the test.
